What is Surfing?

沖縄の海でサーフィンをする女性

Surfing has a long history, dating back to around 400 AD, when ancient Polynesians used wooden boards to ride waves. The sport is believed to have originated in places like Hawaii, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea. Originally, surfers used solid wooden boards, but since the 1950s, polyurethane foam boards coated with resin have become the standard.

Surfing was introduced to Japan in the 1950s, when U.S. military personnel stationed in Kanagawa and Chiba started riding waves. Since then, the sport has spread across Japan and has grown in popularity, especially after being included as an official event in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Choosing a Surf Spot

グループみんなでサーフィン体験

  • East Coast spots are best during the summer.
  • West Coast spots have great waves in the winter.
  • South Coast spots offer year-round surfing.

Some locations have strong rip currents (called “reef currents”), so it’s essential to check the tide levels, wind direction, and ocean conditions before heading out. If you’re a visitor unfamiliar with the area, it’s best to join a guided tour or get local advice from a surf shop before entering the water.

Okinawa’s Coral Reef Waves

Since Okinawa is surrounded by coral reefs, most surf spots are reef breaks. Unlike sandy-bottom beaches, these areas have sharp coral formations, so wearing reef boots is recommended to prevent injuries.

Additionally:

  • Many reef breaks only work during high tide, so timing is crucial.
  • Because the waves break at the reef edge, strong paddling skills are often required.
  • In some cases, boats take surfers to the reef edge for easier access to the waves.

Popular Surf Spots on Okinawa Main Island

Suicide Point (Komesu Coast, Itoman City)

Located on the southern tip of Okinawa, this spot offers consistent waves year-round. The coastline stretches east to west, providing multiple surf breaks suitable for all skill levels. It’s only an hour’s drive from Naha, making it a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.

Sunabe (Miyagi Coast, Chatan Town)

Sunabe is one of Okinawa’s most famous surf spots, particularly during the winter months (December–March) when north-facing winds create excellent waves. Several distinct breaks, such as “California” and “Corner”, cater to different skill levels. The area is lively, with both local and visiting surfers enjoying the waves.

Tengan & Konbu Beach (Uruma City)

This east-coast surf spot is located in a protected bay, meaning the waters are generally calm. Larger waves only occur during typhoon swells, making it an ideal practice area for beginners and intermediates. Unlike reef breaks, this is a sandy beach break, so there’s no risk of injuring your feet on coral.

Maeda Point (Maeda, Onna Village)

Famous for Blue Cave diving and snorkeling, Maeda Point is also a great surf spot from October to April. It has parking and shower facilities, making it a convenient location. However, the waves here are powerful, making it more suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers. Since the reef is shallow, it’s best to surf during high tide to avoid injuries.
