What is Sagari-bana?
The Sagari-bana (Barringtonia asiatica) is a tropical evergreen tree that grows in wetlands and riversides across the tropics and subtropics. In Japan, these delicate flowers are commonly found in Ishigaki Island and Iriomote Island, but Miyako Island is also home to stunning clusters of Sagari-bana trees!
As its name suggests (“Sagari” = hanging, “bana” = flower), this plant produces long, drooping clusters of white and pink flowers, each with four delicate petals and long, radiating stamens. These features give the blossoms an elegant and feathery appearance.
Another charm of the Sagari-bana is its sweet fragrance, often compared to vanilla. As the flowers bloom at night, their enchanting scent attracts pollinating insects.
The flower’s meaning in Japanese culture is “A sign of good fortune.” Why not share this special experience with your loved ones, family, or friends?
Sagari-bana Viewing in Miyako Island
Unlike other islands where Sagari-bana grows along rivers, Miyako Island has fewer rivers, yet it still boasts a beautiful viewing spot. You can find Sagari-bana clusters along the walking trail behind Soedo (Suedo) Village.
The Miyako Island Environmental Club has worked to expand the Sagari-bana habitat, planting trees along the waterways, creating a lush and thriving Sagari-bana forest.
📍 Location: Soedo Village, about 10 minutes by car from Miyako Island’s city center.
🚗 Access: The path to the site is dark at night, so using a GPS or tour service is recommended.
Additionally, some residents grow Sagari-bana in their private gardens, so if you’re lucky, you might even spot one unexpectedly!
Since early summer is the best season, the Sagari-bana Night Viewing Tour has become one of Miyako Island’s most popular seasonal tours.
Best Time & Viewing Hours for Sagari-bana in Miyako Island
🌞 Blooming Season:
✅ June–July (right after the rainy season)
During peak bloom, the Miyako Island Environmental Club organizes special lighting events at the Soedo Sagari-bana habitat, making it easier to explore at night.
🌙 Best Viewing Time:
✅ Starts blooming around 8:00 PM
✅ Full bloom at midnight
✅ Falls by early morning (5:00 AM)
The flower’s short-lived beauty gives it the nickname “The One-Night Phantom Flower.”
While most visitors enjoy the magical nighttime bloom, early morning visitors can witness fallen Sagari-bana flowers covering the ground and floating on the water, creating an equally breathtaking scene.
🌊 In places like Ishigaki and Iriomote, sunrise riverboat tours offer views of Sagari-bana petals drifting on the water. While Miyako Island lacks these rivers, the morning petal-scattered landscapes are still mesmerizing!
Important Tips for Viewing Sagari-bana
Since the Soedo Sagari-bana site is in a natural setting with no streetlights, keep the following in mind:
✔ Bring a flashlight – If you don’t have one, your phone’s light works as a backup.
✔ Wear long sleeves and pants – Protect against mosquitoes and bugs.
✔ Use insect repellent – Many insects are attracted to the light during the event.
✔ Respect the environment – The trees are carefully maintained by the Miyako Island Environmental Club. Avoid breaking branches or leaving trash.
If visiting on your own, be extra cautious when navigating dark, unpaved paths. If you’re unfamiliar with the area, joining a guided tour is the safest option.
✔ Drinks – Stay hydrated during the tour.
✔ Towel – Useful for wiping sweat in warm weather.
If the tour is canceled due to bad weather, you can reschedule or receive a full refund.
