What is Pinaisara Waterfall on Iriomote Island?
Pinaisara Waterfall is located in the midsection of the Hinai River, which flows from Mount Tedou in central Iriomote Island. With a drop of 55 meters, it is the tallest waterfall in Okinawa Prefecture, mesmerizing visitors with its grandeur.
The waterfall’s name comes from the Okinawan words “Pinai”, meaning “beard,” and “Saara”, meaning “hanging down,” as the waterfall’s thin stream resembles a long, flowing beard.
Although the area below the waterfall consists of rugged rocks, a natural pool forms nearby, where visitors can swim and cool off.
How to Reach Pinaisara Waterfall
Route to the Waterfall
- Kayaking – Paddle along the mangrove-lined Hinai River to the waterfall’s base.
- Trekking to the Basin – Hike from the riverside to the waterfall’s basin.
- Trekking to the Top – Continue the trek from the basin to the top of the waterfall.
Since the waterfall is located deep in the jungle, it is challenging for first-time visitors to reach it alone.
The adventure starts with a kayak trip up the Hinai River, followed by a 30-minute trek through the jungle to reach the waterfall’s base. Due to the complexity of the route, joining a guided tour is highly recommended for a safe and enjoyable experience.
